Substitution:
- Taking notes with paper and pencil is no more, type out your notes on google docs!
- take polls/ surveys via texting or on line instead of paper and pencil
- Smart boards, using pie charts, they can easily explain their solutions to a math problem, plus they love coming up to the board!
- Instead of having a handout worksheets, have the worksheet be available on line, this way they can get to it wherever they are!
- Take a quiz using google form instead of paper pencil
- Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvement.
- By using the smart board all of the work has been saved, this way the students and teachers can go back to see what was done correct and what the students need help on, they can also easily spot the mistake because it is not on a white board that goes away when erased.
- After students have written a paper (or something) have them peer edit using google docs.
Substitution and Augmentation are in the enhancement phase because you are taking paper and pencil writing to a new level! You are enhancing the skill of writing a paper in this case.
Augmentation is making the point that by adding technology to the task it will be adding improvements and new features. Whereas Modification is making the point that the task is now changed when technology is being used.
Modification:
- A blog
- Tech allows for significant task redesign
- After a group of students have figured out how to solve a problem, have them make a video explaining how they got the answer.
Redefinition:
- Allow the world to see the blog
- Tech allows for the creation of new tasks, previously learned.
- If the students have their own device they can then get their work (or the teachers) off of the smart board and have it put onto the device. This allows them to have the information at home or wherever they go, plus they are now forming an e-portfolio that they will be able to keep going. In a math classroom this would be helpful because the students will be able to go back and (hopefully) just have a quick glance at a summary and be able to see what they had forgotten how to do. This will/would be helpful for the students moving onto higher math classes.
Modification and redefinition are in the transformation phase because you are taking what something once was and turning it into an entirely new idea! This is allowing many more activities to take place in the classroom! The best part is, the students LOVE using technology.
