My guest blogger is Tiffany Forseth. She is a sixth grade math teacher at Mount Horeb middle school. I was a tutor for her for two years. The questions i asked her were, as a new teacher what do you need to know about managing students behavior? and do you have any advice for time management? Her responses were,
I would make sure that you know the school policy for behavior expectations in the building that you are working in. I would then use that as a foundation for expected behavior for students and follow that. You also need to figure out what you are expecting of students and make that is very clear and be consistent with that from day 1. I have found that students will rise to the behavior expected of them.
Advice for Time Management: This is a learned skill when planning. The more times you teach a topic, the more familiar you become with the lesson and being able to gauge student questions or understanding. I would always be prepared with more than I need so that I don't have down time. Also, having a few content related games to use as fillers if needed is always a good idea.
Time management is also important to think about in regards to your personal time. School can overtake your life, be sure to have set times that you spend doing other things than school work. Remember to take time for yourself!
Have a great day!
